Are you benefiting yet from the great potential traffic you could be getting from social networking sites? Social networking sites come under 3 main categories.
1. Libraries - Examples of libraries are Digg and Technorati. These two sites and sites like them contain collections of information provided by their users.
2. Notice-boards – Users of these sites make recommendations to other sites and make posts on a regular basis. Examples of notice-boards would be ‘Blogs’ and ‘Twitter’etc.
3. Communities – These are the big sites you’ve most probably heard of, ‘FaceBook’, ‘MySpace’ etc. You set up profiles and make them personal by adding your own touch like photos, music, video and writing blog entries etc.
All these sites can be a blessing or a curse, depending on how you use them. You DO NOT want to jump right in ‘Gung –Ho’ and start posting content and links back to your website, you’re most likely to be reported as a ‘spammer’ and possibly get banned.
You want to go in and hang out, chill out, make friends, offer advice and help people. Get a feel for what social networking is all about. This will benefit you and your online business in the long run. Plus you will learn a lot whilst helping other people…cool or what.

Once you gradually build up a network of friends you can start posting comments and content on their profile or ‘Wall’ in the case of ‘FaceBook’. This is just one of the ways to communicate with your network. Don’t be conned into thinking you can just sign up and start ‘Blasting’ out invitations to potential friends and then flood them with offers. Not advisable. This could easily back fire on you and lose you a great source of traffic.
You would most likely be ‘blocked’ or ‘banned’ if you upset or annoy someone. So, think about it, be clever and more importantly, be honest. Let people get to know the real you, after all, you’re a nice person…aren’t you? J Okay, let’s be honest. This can take a bit of time and for some people, can be quite overwhelming. Most people fire in there with all good intention to set up their profile. Then, the first sign of difficulty or not knowing where to turn or what to press, they put it to one side promising themselves they’ll get back to it.
That’s understandable, as we all know there are various other tasks needing done to keep your online empire going. However, it is also a shame. The reason is that this can be great fun and a fantastic way to get tons of FREE traffic to your website. So, if you haven’t got round to it yet, or have put it to one side…don’t sweat it.
